Thor rests his hand on Heimdall’s sword, knuckles turning white.

It’s THOR TIME.

We’ve been walking for less than half a day when I decide that this entire quest was a monumentally bad idea.

It turns out there is more to using the Bifrost than pointing the sword and holding on for dear life. As is seemingly always the case in Asgard, things are more complicated than the crown prince assumed them to be. Rather than being blasted directly to our destination on the wings of a mighty beam of pure light (as it was when I arrived from Vanaheim), when it comes to Nidavellir…

…it appears that we have to walk. All the way to another realm.

I suppose all I can say is that mistakes have been made.

The pace is quick—set by Thor, who is intent on leading the way. Wygul is perched gingerly on my head—why walk when you can ride?—and I try to make him proud by keeping up with Thor.

“Why don’t you fall back and walk with my brother, Lady Sif?” Thor says beside me. “I’m sure his pace would be more to your liking.”

“No, Prince Thor, I think I’ll walk right where I am,” I say as he matches me step for step. “I’m at the front, which is exactly where the leader should be.”

“Ah, I see your mistake. It must be different back home. See, here in Asgard, the one who does the leading? That’s the one who the quest is named for.”

“Except”—I can’t help myself—“we’re not in Asgard.”

“We’re not anywhere,” says Fandral, lagging behind. “We’re nowhere! We’re between where we’ve been and where we’re going. On a bridge made of rainbow, between the stars and the Cosmic Sea!”

I can’t see his point. “So?”

“So?” Fandral looks surprised. “I just…think it’s neat.”

The thing is, it is neat. Thor has been driving me so crazy, I haven’t even taken the time to appreciate the fact that we’re…well, we’re walking through the universe. All the stars overhead, crisscrossed with neon nebulae. The sea below, tossed with wondrous waves. And us in the middle, on a bridge made of rainbows.

“It is neat,” Thor says to me, his voice a reasonable level for once. “Sometimes Fandral is like that. You’ll be all about this hyper-important thing, but then he shows up and he always makes sure you see the cool stuff.”

Much louder, Thor says, “Great call, my dude!”

“I got you, bud!” Fandral yells back.

We walk along for another few minutes. Thor has stopped walking so hard. Now it’s more like we were walking together, rather than racing for the lead.

I do not care for it.

“So,” he says, “if I would have fought Heimdall. Well, I probably would have won. Obviously. But if I had lost…that would not have been great. Not saying that would have happened, but your plan…”
